Who is the course for?


This Level 4 Diploma in School Business Management is designed as part of a pathway of learning for SBM professionals who are moving into a leadership role. Professionals working outside the education sector may also find this qualification a useful starting point for their SBM professional development. This qualification builds core skills in school management through a pathway of six units, beginning with an induction phase. 

Our distance learning model is delivered entirely online, as from feedback it was clear that practising SBM’s struggle to attend face to face classroom sessions away from the school site. Therefore our distance learning model combines webinars, online tutorials, assignment work and online group forums to allow learners to learn at arms’ length at times convenient to them.

QUALIFICATION UNIT OVERVIEW

Unit 1: Understanding School Business Management
To develop a knowledge and understanding of the school setting and the role of the School Business Manager within the political and organisational context of school business management and to establish and evaluate professional skills and their impact on the workplace as required by a practising or potential school business manager.

Unit 2: Planning and Leading Sessions in Schools
To develop an understanding and ability to be able to identify and negotiate a development project of benefit to the school; to develop a detailed plan for the project, to lead, manage and evaluate the project, and to reflect on own professional learning and management skills as required by a practising and potential school business manager.

Unit 3: Managing Finance in Schools
To develop understanding of the principles of school financial management and the planning and setting of the school budget; he management of the school’s finance team, and procurement and value for money as required by a practising and potential school business manager.

Unit 4: Managing School Facilities
To develop understanding and ability to be able to contribute to the management of a school’s facilities including the identification of areas for improvement of areas improvement or development. The module concerns understanding strategic site management in a school; being able to manage the operation of a school’s facilities; being able to manage a schools information and communication technology (ICT) facilities and healthy catering in a school as required by a practising and potential school business manager.

Unit 5: Managing Risk in Schools
To develop knowledge and understanding of the management of risk in schools, including health and safety, fire safety and emergency and continuity planning as required by a practising and potential school business manager.
